Gregory Barber
Bassoon; Coordinator, Woodwind Chamber Music; Orchestral Training
Gregory Barber regularly performs with the San Francisco Symphony, having played every chair in the section, and was an acting member from 2005 to 2008. Principal bassoon with the California Symphony and the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and a member of the San Diego Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, he has been guest principal with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Opera and New Century Chamber Orchestra. He has played contrabassoon with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and recorded numerous film scores with the Skywalker (LucasFilm) Symphony. He gave the American premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Bassoon Concerto and was music director of I Solisti di Oakland, a chamber orchestra which won an ASCAP award for imaginative programming. He conducted the Arch Ensemble for Contemporary Music in San Francisco, New York and Europe, and on their recording of music by Robert Erickson. Educated at Brandeis University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, he studied conducting with Jean-Louis Le Roux and Jon Robertson, bassoon with Raymond Ojeda, Matthew Ruggiero and Norman Herzberg, plus postgraduate work with Leonard Sharrow and Bernard Garfield.
