San Francisco Conservatory of Music Presents a Fourth Season of Blueprint with World and U.S. Premieres of New Music

SAN FRANCISCO, September 8, 2005 : In its fourth season, entitled New Viennese Perspectives, the San Francisco Conservatory's BluePrint New Music Project led by artistic director Nicole Paiement continues to bring thrilling performances of new music to the city. In a season offering fresh perspectives on the Second Viennese School of composition, the fourth annual BluePrint Project explores the continuum of modern music, from Arnold Schoenberg and his 20th-century contemporaries, to the works of today's living composers whose music they most powerfully influenced.

The season opens on October 14 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a reprise performance on October 15 at the Northbrae Community Church in Berkeley. Entitled Arnold Schoenberg: Insights on Expressionism, the season opener features the music of Schoenberg and his most famous American students, including John Cage's remarkable work for percussion ensemble Construction III and Leon Kirchner's Trio II. Headlining the concert is the world premiere of Conservatory alumna Laura Schwendinger's newly-commissioned Lady Lazarus, performed by Ensemble Parallèle, the Conservatory's resident professional new music ensemble, with Canadian mezzo-soprano soloist Patricia Green. Olga Neuwirth, 37-year-old Austrian avant garde composer and San Francisco Conservatory alumna, is prominent on this year's BluePrint project as well. Her works Spleen for solo bass clarinet, performed by Jeffrey Anderle, and Marsyas for solo piano performed by Conservatory faculty pianist Mack McCray, are U.S. premieres. A pre-concert talk with Laura Schwendinger and Jeffrey Anderle opens the event, and audience members can meet the composers and performers at the post-concert reception that will follow each event.

The second concert of the season, Anton Webern: Sturm und Klang, November 11 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music explores texture and timbre in sound with performances of works by Webern, Neuwirth, Russian composer Alfred Schnittke, and American composer Joseph Schwantner's Canticle of the Evening Bells. A pre-concert talk is offered by Conservatory faculty composer and Neuwirth's former teacher Elinor Armer, as well as Jonathan Stehney, bassoon soloist on Neuwirth's Torsion. The season culminates March 10, 2006 with Alban Berg: Lyrical Modernism, an evening dedicated to four composers who balance the past with the present while keeping an eye on the future of lyricism in music: Alban Berg, Frank Martin, Brian Cherney, and Olga Neuwirth. Soloists include Conservatory faculty violist Jodi Levitz and pianist Mack McCray. Cherney delivers a pre-concert talk at 7:00.
