AE Piano Repertory and Ensemble Class Session II - 2067

Instructor: Jacqueline Chew
Dates: Mondays, 7:30-9:00pm, November 21 to December 19, 2016
Location: San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Room 323
Cost: $270
Pianists will work weekly on solo repertoire and ensemble pieces (4-hands or two-piano). Study may also include "practice techniques", sight-reading, piano technique etc, as needed.

Prerequisite: Piano II or instructor approval

AE Piano Repertory and Ensemble Class Session I and AE Piano Repertory and Ensemble Class Session II can be taken as one contiguous course. Session II is a continuation of Session I, though students may sign up for one or the other depending on his or her personal schedule.

Guitar Orchestra

SFCM's Adult Extension Guitar Orchestra brings together Bay Area guitar enthusiasts to rehearse and perform a wide range of musical styles from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods. Under the direction of guitarist Scott Cmiel, students rehearse in a collaborative environment to improve their musicianship, technique, and reading skills. A placement assessment is required for participation.

Placement is required to enable the director to create ensembles where performers will feel excited and enthusiastic about the music they are playing. There is no need to be a virtuoso - good tone, good memory, and enthusiastic attitude are all that’s required.

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Performance of a solo work which demonstrates your ability
  • Two-octave scale using any left hand fingering you like and played rest stroke with i-m alternation
  • A pima arpeggio and a pami arpeggio using common chords or open strings

This class is for those who have completed Piano I or by teacher's approval (Jacqueline Chew; jchew@sfcm.edu). Students should be able to read treble clef/bass clef and have an understanding of major scales, relative and parallel minor scales and chords (tonic, dominant and subdominant). Classes will consist of playing scales and chords, rhythmic exercises, technique, solo and ensemble repertoire.

These classes approach playing the piano through an understanding of music theory, with emphasis on sight-reading, transposition and rhythm. Piano I begins with music notation (rhythm and intervals). In conjunction with playing simple classical pieces, students learn major scales, relative and parallel minor scales and chords (tonic, dominant and subdominant). Piano II explores these same subjects in greater depth while adding seventh chords, practice techniques, ensemble and analysis of student’s repertoire.

Music History

Women in Rock - 2874

Women in Rock: The First 25 Years presents the history of women's contributions to rock music from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. Using both common and rare recordings and video clips, the course covers women performers from rockabilly and girl groups through soul, the British Invasion, psychedelia, the singer-songwriter movements, and punk/new wave. It will also discuss women's behind-the-scenes roles in songwriting, production, and rock journalism, as well as how the changing roles of women in society were reflected in how they sang, wrote, and recorded.

This class explores the many performance aspects of vocal music in a supportive master class setting. The primary focus is classical: from art song to opera, but other genres are welcome. We work on interpretation, language, technique, voice science, drama, text, and many other aspects of this incredible art form accompanied by an SFCM collaborative pianist. Students should be prepared to bring pieces to perform each class (memorization preferred) and can choose to work on one or more throughout the entire session. The series culminates in a performance in the lovely SFCM Recital Hall. Singers from experienced beginners/novice to advanced/professional are welcome. Enrollment limited to 8 students.

This class is for advanced singers only. A minimum of 3 years of private voice lessons and some stage performance experience required. This class explores the many performance aspects of vocal music in a supportive master class setting. The primary focus is classical: from art song to opera, but other genres are welcome. We work on interpretation, language, technique, voice science, drama, text, and many other aspects of this incredible art form accompanied by an SFCM collaborative pianist. Students should be prepared to bring pieces to perform each class (memorization required) and can choose to work on one or more throughout the entire session. We may also create ensembles or scenes with 2 or more singers from opera, oratorio, or art song. The series culminates in a performance in the SFCM Recital Hall. Enrollment limited to 8 students.

Students must pass a preliminary audition in order to register for this class. If you cannot pass that audition, you are not guaranteed a spot. Please contact Heidi Moss at hmoss@sfcm.edu to arrange the audition.
