Artist Profile

Jonathan Vinocour has been principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony since 2009, and previously served as principal violist of the St. Louis Symphony and guest principal of Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra. Mr. Vinocour is regularly featured as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony and is an active recitalist around the Bay Area. An avid chamber musician, he has performed at the Marlboro, Ravinia, Prussia Cove, Aspen, Seattle, and Bridgehampton festivals, among others. He has also been a guest of the Boston Chamber Music Society, Los Angeles Da Camera Society, International Sejong Soloists, and is a founding member and regular performer with ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra). Mr. Vinocour serves on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, is a frequent mentor at the New World Symphony, and has given master classes nationally and abroad. A native of Rochester, New York, Mr. Vinocour graduated from Princeton University in 2001 with a degree in chemistry and was awarded the university’s Sudler Prize in the Arts. He completed his master’s degree in 2003 at the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Kim Kashkashian. He plays on a viola made by Lorenzo Storioni in 1784 on loan from the San Francisco Symphony.
