Music Appreciation and Analysis

Continuing Education Online Summer Classes

Music Appreciation: Bird's Eye Bach

Instructor: Harry Whitney
Dates: June 22 –  July 27; Tuesdays, 5:30 – 7:00 PM (6 classes)
Tuition: $195
This summer session provides a look at the life, work, influences, and legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach. We will learn about the man behind the music, and hear his towering, evening-length masterpieces. We will study the early Baroque repertoire that influenced him, and explore the century-spanning legacy of Bach as teacher by way of the vast amount of music he wrote for his students and family.

This class is equally appropriate for a music lover with no previous study experience, or a more seasoned student looking to step back and admire one of the greatest composers in history!

Harmony and Analysis Workshop

Instructor: Harry Whitney
Dates: June 23 – July 28; Wednesdays, 5:30 – 7:00 PM (6 classes)
Tuition: $195
This summer session provides students an opportunity to apply analysis skills learned in class to a wide range of repertoire, either student- or instructor-selected. We will all get to appreciate excellent music together as a group. All students will see how composers through the ages use principles of dissonance and resolution of dissonance to create musical meaning. In addition to studying repertoire, there will also be a unique chance to discuss four-part writing following the classical rules of voice-leading, with an optional student assignment and chance for “show and tell”.

Prerequisite: Completion of a Continuing Education Music Theory class, or contact Harry Whitney at hwhitney@sfcm.edu to see if this class would be a good fit for you.
