Worship Accompanist - First Presbyterian Church of Oakland (ends 12/31)

Qualifications: 

Applicants must have a bachelor of arts in music or a related field. Experience as a church musician is required.
Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of Reformed liturgy to support the musical experience. Applicants must
demonstrate expertise in a variety of musical styles and genres appropriate for service music. Applicants must
demonstrate expertise on the Rosales Opus 16 pipe organ and piano.
Applicants must be able to transpose easily and sight read. Applicants must demonstrate ability to lead the
congregation in hymns and accompany the choir. Proficiency with additional instruments is welcomed.
Applicants must also demonstrate ability to be collaborative, diligent, and thoughtful. It is not necessary for
applicants to be Presbyterian or Christian. But comfort in a religious setting and respect of religious teaching is
required.

Responsibilities: 

The Worship Accompanist must:
Participate in 48 Sunday morning worship services, and other special worship services (included Ash Wednesday,
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Christmas Eve). The church may request additional accompaniment for mid-week
services, funerals, weddings and other events which may be negotiated for additional compensation from either the
church or individuals using the facilities. Services for worship are one hour long, beginning at 10 AM.
Be available following worship services to attend Fellowship time with the congregation, which consists of coffee and
refreshments, conversation and socializing. This typically lasts 30 - 60 minutes.
Accompany the choir during weekly choir rehearsal. Weekly rehearsal is two hours long and is typically held Sunday
before or following worship. One additional Saturday rehearsal is often offered once a month.
Select music for use as a worship prelude, postlude and offertory and other service music as required by the Order of
Worship.
Practice music selected by the Pastor and Music Director for congregational hymns, service songs, and other pieces of
music that may be used as part of the Order or Worship.
Maintain correspondence with the Pastor and Music Director as is needed to coordinate the Order of Worship and to
arrive at rehearsals and worship services prepared.
Devote sufficient time to selection of music and practice on instruments as is needed.
Manage the care, scheduled maintenance and tuning of the church’s instruments with the assistance of the Worship &
Music Committee.
Schedule substitute musicians when ill or on vacation.
Embrace working with an all-volunteer choir, children, people with emerging musical talent and those who wish to
contribute musically with encouragement, leadership and good direction.

Salary: 

$14,000 per year (or $269 per service), Hours: 8 per week

for use in worship. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in a variety of styles and genres for both choral and
instrumental music. Applicants must demonstrate expertise on the Rosales Opus 16 pipe organ and piano.

Lead weekly choir rehearsal. This time must be spent preparing the choir to sing. Members of the choir will be
responsible for printing and distribution of sheet music and binders before rehearsal time. Must accompany the choir
while providing direction in both rehearsal and worship. Weekly rehearsal is two hours long and is typically held
Sunday before or following worship. One additional Saturday rehearsal is often offered once a month.
Attend a weekly Worship Planning Meeting with the Pastor, staff and lay leaders for the purpose of assisting the Pastor
with planning the Order or Worship. The Pastor is responsible for selection of hymns, but will consult, the Music
Director who is responsible for the selection of all other music. Both the Pastor and Director are expected to work
collaboratively in this process. Meetings are typically 60 - 90 minutes long.
Devote sufficient time to selection of music and practice on instruments as is needed. Must also devote sufficient time
to correspondence so as to arrive at meetings, rehearsal, and worship prepared.
Manage the care, scheduled maintenance and tuning of the church’s instruments with the assistance of the Worship &
Music Committee.
Schedule substitute musicians when ill or on vacation.

Director of Music -  San Geronimo Community Presbyterian Church (ends 2/1)

Description: 

San Geronimo Community Presbyterian Church is a wonderfully inclusive and passionate small church, with a full-time pastor located in beautiful rural West Marin (Church in the Country). We are looking for a dedicated, creative and enthusiastic Director of Music – to serve as pianist/accompanist/choir director.

Qualifications: 

• Music leadership: 3 years (Preferred)
• Teaching music to children: 3 years (Preferred)
• Church attending: 1 year (Preferred)

Responsibilities: 

• Act as organist/pianist for the weekly Sunday worship service, selecting music in consultation with the pastor. Select and purchase music as needed. Accompany the congregation on hymns and responses at Sunday service. Assist with occasional special services.
• Lead small adult choir rehearsals (once a week) and prepares/plays Introits, anthems, prelude and postlude. Seek to locate and invite diverse musical groups/artists to aid in Sunday worship. Accompany soloists as needed.
• The ideal candidate will be able to play a variety of musical styles on the piano. A fine Kawai baby grand and keyboards are available and creative musical ideas are welcome to enhance and move worship forward.
• The Sanctuary has a TV screen and the Minister is planning to renew services using video, contemporary music and art.
• A community children's group has been organized to bring music to children and young families. The Music Director rehearses the children for two 8-week sessions a year depending on need and certain projects. Support the youth music program.

Salary: 

Part-Time $12,000 -$15,000 depending on skill / 8-10 hours a week - summers less time when the choir does not sing
