Young Musicians Program Faculty -  Community Music Center (ends 5/1)

Description: 

Young Musicians Program High School String Orchestra and Music Theory Instructor (10am - 12:00 noon during the school year)

Young Musicians Program Middle School String Ensemble and Music Theory Instructor (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm during the school year)

Qualifications: 

  • Experience teaching strings, music theory and ensembles.
  • Experience with middle and high school teaching is helpful but not required.

General CMC faculty expectations to provide well-rounded, quality music instruction:

  • encourage creativity, originality and personal expression
  • establish consistency in attendance and progress

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach one string orchestra class, including choosing repertoire.
  • Teach one music theory class.
  • Act as a student advisor, monitoring student progress and involvement, communicating with student, parents and the YMP Coordinator about issues as needed.
  • Participate in planning, including faculty planning meetings (2-3 times per year), giving feedback on program structure, curriculum and progress.
  • Prepare students and/or participate in two performances per year on-site and possibly others off-site.
  • Evaluate each student’s musical growth and performance.

Salary:

Compensation similar to Bay Area organizations payment to teaching artists

Salary:

String Instructor -  Youth Music Monterey (ends 7/18)

Description: 

Youth Music Monterey’s South County Strings program is looking for exceptional string instructors for its teaching sites in south Monterey County, California.
Youth Music Monterey's South County Strings program involves formal partnerships between YMM and south Monterey County school districts to provide music lessons during the school day. A team of instructors provide violin, viola, and cello instruction for beginning and intermediate students ages 8-13.
The position is 20-30 hours per week, and runs September through June each year.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in String Performance or Music Education preferred.
  • Experience teaching group string lessons to students preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Successfully pass a background check.
  • Vehicle and proof of insurance necessary.

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach mixed group lessons for violin, viola, and cello to up to 15 students/class at beginning and intermediate levels.
  • Deliver high-quality instruction and basic musicianship.
  • Develop effective classroom management and lesson plans.
  • Assist with recruitment, registrations, sign-ups, and arranging class times at each school site.
  • Work with YMMC staff to manage instrument distribution and retrieval according to YMM procedures; Provide simple repairs to YMM instruments, or return damaged instruments to office for repairs.
  • Maintain current attendance lists, and provide weekly updates to YMM office.
  • Work collaboratively with other YMM instructors and staff to facilitate opportunities for combined events (Chamber Players outreach concerts, Orchestras’ season finale concert).
  • Work cooperatively with school site staff to incorporate student performances in school or community outreach events, students should prepare for and perform in at least 2 concerts each program year.
  • Work with the other string teachers to create an overall improved string ensemble.
  • Communicate any changes in schedule to the YMM office immediately.
  • Meet with YMM office and board as needed.

Salary: 

65.00/hr.
