Audition Requirements

All applicants are required to perform two contrasting pieces of the applicant's own choice demonstrating their current level of proficiency and complete a musicianship placement. String and piano applicants will also be required to take a chamber music audition for placement purposes. Composition, piano, technology and applied composition, and voice applicants must review additional specific requirements listed below.

Musicianship Placement

All applicants are required to complete a musicianship placement on the day of their audition which will consist of a 15 minute performance evaluation (sight singing, ear training, dictation, etc.) and 30 minute written evaluation (harmonic analysis and music theory). This will be used for placement purposes only, and will not affect the result of the audition.

Piano Audition Repertoire Requirements

The list below is a guide to the minimum repertoire level requirements acceptable for piano entrance auditions. These are suggested pieces. Reasonable substitutions are welcome.

  • Baroque
    • Bach Kleine Preludium (one of the small Preludes) or a selection from the Anna Magdalena book
  • Classical
    • A movement from any Clementi or Kuhlau Sonatina
  • Romantic
    • Schumann Album for the Young (one selection)
    • Chopin "An Introduction to Chopin" Alfred/Palmer edition (one selection)
    • Grieg Lyric Pieces

Voice Audition Requirements

Two contrasting pieces of the applicant's own choice demonstrating current level of proficiency. Vocalists are required to audition with piano accompaniment. If applicants need an accompanist, please contact the Pre-College office.

Composition Audition Requirements

Submit two compositions representative of the applicants current work as a PDF (Portable Document Format). Recordings may be submitted as supplemental materials, however recordings are not required to be considered for admission.

Technology and Applied Composition Audition Requirements

Submit two works: one musical score that demonstrates original musical thought and the fundamentals of compositional technique and one self-produced recording of an original work (can be made using any combination of acoustic and virtual instruments).

Chamber Music Audition

String and piano applicants will be scheduled for an additional required chamber music audition on the same day as the admission audition. This audition is for placement purposes only and does not guarantee a student’s admittance in a chamber music ensemble. Students applying for the Young Person's Program (ages 6-8) will not need to take a chamber music audition.
