What is your hometown?

San Diego, CA

What is your favorite recording? Why?

"Horowitz Plays Scarlatti" for his incredible phrasing, control, and ability to change moods on a dime. Also, Kevin Puts and Time for Three's - "Contact" is a recording I can put on at any time and feel the magic. And, anything put out by Tank and The Bangas for their unique sounds, catchy grooves, and all around funkiness! 

What are you passionate about outside of music?

Creating aesthetically pleasing surroundings through through the art of macrame, sewing, and punch needle, among other art forms. I love creating beautiful things with my hands! I'm also very passionate about mindfulness and human emotion. I'm dedicated to continuously exploring my internal world, noticing the emotions that arise, and choosing what I do with those emotions. This work is very influential on my music-making and teaching and is never-ending!

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

In 8th grade, when my flute teacher brought me into the pit of a professional musical theater show (I believe it was South Pacific) where I got to shadow her and then play on the finale. 

What was a turning point in your career?

Realizing that I'll never be "done". I'll constantly be growing and striving for more. 

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

Either an optometrist or a therapist, with some sort of art business on the side. 

What is your daily practice routine?

I warm up with long tones and listen for the most beautiful, clear, and rich sounds I can produce. Then I move to scales and other finger exercises to warm up my hands. After that, I'm ready to dive into music I'm preparing for rehearsals, concerts, or auditions. I write down each piece/excerpt I'm working on on a little piece of paper and evenly distribute those papers between 3 envelopes (Days A, B, and C). Everyday is a new envelope and I pull out a slip of paper at random to find out what I work on. So, after 3 days, I've worked on all my current repertoire. As I get closer to performances/auditions, I record myself A LOT and listen back. 

What do you think makes a concert experience unique?

Hearing performers speak about the program, especially the personal and, more importantly, emotional connections they have to the pieces.

Biography

Flutist Victoria “Tori” Hauk loves exploring the beauty of music through collaboration with fellow Bay Area musicians and by sharing it with the next generation of musicians through coaching and teaching.
She is an avid chamber musician and can be seen performing with groups including: Avenue Winds, One Found Sound, Areon Flutes, and Nomad Session.
Orchestras she has worked with include: Marin Symphony, Vallejo Festival Orchestra, Napa Valley Festival, Midsummer Mozart Festival, Berkeley Symphony, California Symphony, Stockton Symphony, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and New World Symphony.
She maintains an active private teaching studio and also teaches at San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Pre-College Division and California State University, East Bay.
She is the winner of the National Flute Association’s 2022 Convention Performers Competition, University of Arizona President’s Concerto Competition and Arizona Flute Society Competition and is an award winner of the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego, MTNA Southwest Regional Competition, San Diego Flute Guild Young Artist Competition and has received the Presser Foundation Award.
She received her professional studies diploma at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music studying with Tim Day, her master’s degree in music at Lynn Conservatory studying with Jeffrey Khaner and Renée Siebert, and her bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Arizona studying with Brian Luce.
