A Message to the SFCM Community

"...now is the time for all of us to stand in solidarity, bound by our continuing pursuit of human rights and dignity for all."

Timothy Foo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
David H. Stull, President

Dear SFCM Community:

Wherever you may be in the world, we write to extend our love and support. We stand at a moment in time that is unprecedented for all of us.

Our first priority is you. Over the next few weeks, we will reach out to provide resources in the form of classes, counseling, lessons, conversations, and opportunities for us to remain connected. We are a family. Though we will continue to be separated for a while, we will use this time to strengthen our enduring bond as a community.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is united in fellowship and mission against racism, injustice, hatred, and all forms of violence. We believe in the relentless and lawful pursuit of peace, equality, freedom and security for all people throughout this nation and the world. The unfortunate truth is that the death of George Floyd is one of many countless acts of violence where justice falls victim to hatred and abuse of power. No statement will capture the fear and despair that is perpetuated by systemic racism, but now is the time for all of us to stand in solidarity, bound by our continuing pursuit of human rights and dignity for all. These are the principles that unite our community and we must take bold steps to build a brighter future and a better world.

To that end, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the President and Senior Leadership, the Faculty and Staff, will begin a process with you, with the Civic Center, and with community leaders to use our work as artists to advance our principles and mission through a series of ambitious projects we will create together. We have the power to forge a new path of systemic inclusion, one that harnesses music and beauty to inspire empathy and equality.

Each day presents an opportunity to create hope and contribute to positive change. We will achieve our objectives through actions fueled by resilience and optimism. These elements are the most potent formula for sustaining and improving our lives. Therefore, it is critically important for each of you to invest in your own well-being. If you find that you are in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us

We are bound together by our passion for music and our inviolable commitment to one another. We will move forward with grace and resolve and do this together.

On behalf of our board of trustees, our faculty and staff, we send our best wishes to all of you.

Sincerely,

Timothy Foo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
David H. Stull, President
