Alam Khan

Two-time Grammy-nominated artist Alam Khan is the Khalifa of the Seni Maihar Gharana and son of legendary Sarod maestro Swara Samrat Ali Akbar Khan. For more than two decades, he has brought the tradition of North Indian classical music to audiences around the world while developing a distinctive voice as a performer, composer, and collaborator.

Alam began training with his father at age seven in the traditional Guru-Shishya system. He later accompanied Ali Akbar Khan internationally from 1996 to 2006, performing at major venues and festivals including the Royal Jodhpur Palace, Dover Lane Music Festival in Kolkata, and Lincoln Center Jazz Festival in New York.

Since launching his solo career in 1998, Alam has become one of the leading Sarod players of his generation, earning praise from Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, and Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. He has performed with renowned Tabla masters including Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee.

Beyond classical music, Alam has collaborated with Tedeschi Trucks Band, Vijay Iyer, Blake Mills, Anoushka Shankar, Karsh Kale, Beats Antique, Bob Weir, the San Francisco Symphony, Del Sol Quartet, and others. He is a founding member of Grand Tapestry and the primary composer of The Resonance Between.

Following his father’s passing in 2009, Alam became Head of Indian Classical Instrumental Studies at the Ali Akbar College of Music, where he continues preserving and advancing his family’s musical legacy. His work bridges tradition with contemporary expression, carrying this lineage forward for new generations worldwide.
