Q&A

What is your hometown?

Jilin, China.

What is your favorite recording? Why?

One of my favorite recordings is Itzhak Perlman and Martha Argerich’s performance of César Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major. I especially admire the warmth, freedom, and emotional depth of their playing, as well as the natural dialogue between the violin and piano. As a collaborative pianist, I find their musical communication deeply inspiring.

What are you passionate about outside of music?

Hiking, cooking.

Who were your major teachers?

Tim Bach.

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

Listen first, then play.

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

When I began performing with other musicians, I realized how much I enjoyed the communication and connection that happens through music. That experience made me want to pursue music professionally.

What was a turning point in your career?

Studying collaborative piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music was an important turning point in my career. Meeting and studying with Professor Tim Bach helped me discover that instrumental collaboration was the area of music I felt most connected to and wanted to pursue more deeply.

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

I would probably have followed in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor.

If you could play only three composers for the rest of your life, who would they be?

Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninoff.

What recordings can we hear you on?

Above the Dock, solo recording by Niyang Wang — Global Gate Music, 2026.
