Q&A

What is your hometown?

Saratoga, CA.

What is your favorite recording?

Third Coast Percussion: Philip Glass Aguas de Amazonia (w/ Constance Volk).

What are you passionate about outside of music?

I love riding my bikes, and am very lucky to live so close to such amazing cycling trails. Generally really enjoy the outdoors, I've been lucky to go on some pretty special adventures that I'm always happy to share stories from!

Who were your major teachers?

Chien-Kwan Lin, Lars Mlekusch.

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

Greg Lemond: "It never gets easier, you just go faster."

What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?

There are many many different ways to engage with and build a career in music, so I am always excited when students explore the myriad possibilities outside of playing their instrument.

What was a turning point in your career?

Starting to work for Alarm Will Sound was my first real exposure to the business of making music out in the world. Through my work there, I have learned about all of the ins and outs of actually making concerts happen, and participated of some pretty special projects!

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

I love working with my hands, so I think I might have ended up in some kind of mechanic or engineering situation. I also love the outdoors, so some work in that field could also be fun! I actually worked in a bike shop for some time and really enjoyed my time (and the employee discount)!

What is your daily practice routine?

I don't practice every day (gasp!), but I do keep a regular routine with increased activity around gigs. I have a deep love for the fundamentals, and always start with long tones and vibrato work. I also really enjoy free improvisation, and try to squeeze some improv into every session as a way to get some ideas out and explore the instrument.

What is your unrealized project?

I have concepts of a solo album that presents a perfect cross section of my mind and thoughts. There are so many weird, fun, serious, and confusing things floating around in there, yet somehow I know they all make sense together. If I can figure out a way to put all of that together into one package, I think it would be really interesting!

What do you think makes a concert experience unique?

The concerts I have enjoyed the most were the ones where I was able to make some new connection or reach a new understanding during the performance. I also always appreciate when performers put effort into building a strong narrative or guiding principle that the performance is structured around.

Please list your most important collaborations.

I am very proud of the work I did for Alarm Will Sound's Carnegie Hall show "Heard" in 2024. Working with Tania Leon to share stories of how composers feel "seen" in their music was such a fulfilling project, and it was very fulfilling to see the audience's reception to the materials I had prepared for the show.

What recordings can we hear you on?

Baljinder Sekhon: Alchemy on Innova records
