On Friday, March 8,  the Concert Truck will park in Civic Center Plaza on Fulton St, in between the Asian Art Museum and the San Francisco Public Library. Performances will be at 12 PM and 2 PM and will feature SFCM students. 

The Concert Truck Visits SFCM for a Community Engagement residency, engaging with students enrolled in the Professional Development course, Conservatory Connect, a class focused on teaching students how to engage with their communities through music performance.

Students will work closely with The Concert Truck artists, Nick Luby, Susan Zhang, and Rieko Tsuchida, to form small ensembles and develop effective and approachable programs to perform out in the community.

About The Concert Truck

The Concert Truck is a mobile music venue that strengthens communities by redefining the concert experience and making live music accessible to all. It engages diverse communities and audiences nationwide with thoughtful, timely programming, and works with arts organizations of all sizes to build a critical presence in their communities.

Impassioned by their love for music and belief in its emotional power, pianists Nick Luby and Susan Zhang converted a 16 foot box truck into a fully functioning mobile concert hall, complete with lights, sound system, and piano. Since then, The Concert Truck has toured across the country, presenting concerts in city streets, music and arts festivals, schools, neighborhoods, parks... anywhere you can think to park a truck. Nick, Susan, and the Truck have been featured by Voice of America – VOA, Minnesota Public Radio, the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, WYPR Maryland, and many local TV news stations and online publications and syndicates.

In addition to sharing original programming with local communities, The Concert Truck strengthens relationships between arts organizations and the communities they serve. In the Fall 2020 season, The Concert Truck partnered with The Kennedy Center’s Washington National Opera, University of South Carolina, Southeastern Piano Festival, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra to deliver great music to their local communities. Additionally, The Concert Truck created an online children’s show in partnership with the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival that has been presented to over 40,000 students in North Carolina schools. Other past presenters include Minnesota Public Radio and the Smithsonian.

The Concert Truck launched in April 2016, giving eight performances in five days throughout the city of Columbia, SC. It has received awards, fellowships, and grants for social innovation and creativity in music.

Artists

Nick Luby is an artist that breaks boundaries and challenges the status quo. He has won prizes in numerous competitions, most recently the 2019 Prix Ravel. Nick has concertized throughout the U.S. and in France, Italy, and the Czech Republic, and his recordings have been broadcast on public radio. 
Nick holds the Graduate Certificate in Performance from the University of South Carolina, an MM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, and a BA with honors in Music and a double major in Philosophy from Wesleyan University. His primary teachers include Arthur Greene and Marina Lomazov, and he has received additional tutelage from Nelita True, William Bolcolm, Robert Levin, and Ivan Moravec. 
A Chapel Hill native, Nick maintains a successful teaching studio in Baltimore, where he resides when not on tour. His students have won international competitions, and he was a featured guest artist at the Exploring Chamber Music Festival at the University of Northern Iowa.

Since making her Carnegie Hall debut in 2011, prize-winning pianist Rieko Tsuchida has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Tsuchida made her professional concerto debut in 2011 performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the California Symphony. She has also performed as a soloist with the Ashdod Symphonic Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, and San Domenico Orchestra. Her many prizes include the SONY USA Foundation Grant in 2016 from the Salon de Virtuosi, YoungArts NFAA Finalist, and 3rd Prize in the IIYM International Piano Competition. She has also been invited to perform at other prestigious festivals and venues such as the Verbier Festival Academy, Salle Gaveau, and more. 
Tsuchida currently lives between New York and Paris. In October 2022 she released an album with London Opera cellist Tessa Seymour of Lera Auerbach’s 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano as part of a project funded by Académie Musicale de Villecroze. Recent performance highlights include her recital debut at Salle Cortot, the Eiffel Tower, and concerts in Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York. Tsuchida also recently became Artistic Director of Classical Music Collection Japan (CMCJ), a project funded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to promote the classical music culture of Japan. She will make her concert debut in Japan with CMCJ this winter in Tokyo’s Oji Hall. 
Tsuchida earned her Bachelor of Music Degree at the Peabody Conservatory under the tutelage of Boris Slutsky.
