Running the Kapelle Programs on CrossOver Mac
The Kapelle programs run just fine right on Mac OS X, using the program "CrossOver Mac" from CodeWeavers.
CrossOver Mac emulates the necessary operating system support for Windows applications. It doesn't require a copy of Windows, but allows the programs to run directly within a Mac OS X environment. It can't run all software by any means, but the Kapelle programs were written by following the Windows programming guidelines very closely, and as a result, they run without a hitch under CrossOver Mac.
You can get CrossOver Mac here — it's a very reasonably priced piece of software.
Once you've installed CrossOver Mac, you need to download and install the Kapelle programs. Here are a few tips:
- Be sure to install the font into the "Bottle" that CrossOver Mac creates. It will warn you about installing multiple pieces of software into the same Bottle, but with the Kapelle programs, that will work just fine. When you install any of the Kapelle programs, just click "OK" for the installation when the installer window comes up; don't change the settings in any way.
- If you don't install the font, you'll get some very odd symbols for things like quarter and half notes, so be sure to install it.
- You can install all of the Kapelle programs into the same Bottle.
- You won't get any sound initially when you run each program for the same time. In the "Playback Menu" choose "MIDI Options", and then select the very first item in the "Output" menu — it will say something like "Software Synth 0". That's what you need for MIDI playback. Once you've made that setting once, you won't ever need to do it again.
