Our Impact | 2019-20
Thank you from SFCM President David H. Stull
Who studies at SFCM?
In 2019-20, SFCM had an enrollment of 461 Collegiate students, 160 of whom graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, or Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate. We are proud that SFCM continues to be the most diverse of any conservatory in the country. Among Collegiate students, voice and strings are the two most popular areas of study.
Who teaches at SFCM?
Our Collegiate faculty comprised 28 full-time and 119 part-time members. SFCM students benefited from a 3:1 student-teacher ratio and the opportunity to study with world-renowned artists, including 35 members of the SF Symphony, Opera, and Ballet orchestras as well as the SFJAZZ Collective. See two of our major appointments announced in 2019-20 below.

How do we share music?
SFCM students, faculty, and visiting artists shared music with more than 40,000 audience members—more than any year before—through in-person performances at 50 Oak Street and virtual performances during shelter-in-place. Outside our walls, SFCM students gave more than 275 performances at galas, weddings, and other events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
How do we engage the community?
1,683 people with limited access to music experienced 55 performances by SFCM students in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and other San Francisco Bay Area locations.
About 2,600 K-12 students attending local public schools and after-school programs benefited from the music instruction and mentorship of SFCM students and recent alumni. When the pandemic began, we moved our programs online to continue to safely educate young musicians.
Who supports us?
1,077 individual donor households, 82 institutional donors, 147 legacy society members, and 19 estates, in addition to our inspiring volunteers, collaborators, faculty, and staff, contributed to the success of our students and programs.
Have you seen our new home for music?
In 2019-20, SFCM continued construction of the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts, our new residential housing, education and performance facility that opened to students in October 2020. Located at 200 Van Ness Avenue, the Bowes Center expands SFCM’s existing campus in the heart of the Civic Center and is already transforming our students’ educational experience.

The 2019-20 Academic Year in Pictures
In October 2020, SFCM opened the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts, our new residential housing, education and performance facility, to our first 250 student residents, including 54 SF Ballet School students. Located at 200 Van Ness Avenue, the Bowes Center expands SFCM’s existing campus in the heart of the Civic Center and is transforming our students’ educational experience.
SFCM acquired Opus 3 Artists, forming an unprecedented strategic alliance that links the leading management company for professional musicians and ensembles with SFCM students, faculty and community to provide extraordinary opportunities for collaboration.
SFCM appointed Jason Hainsworth to Lead Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at SFCM to build on the school’s important work to strengthen the Conservatory and industry through actions that systemically oppose racism and injustice.
SFCM, in partnership with the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) and the SFCM President’s Advisory Council on Equity and Inclusion, announced that composer Trevor Weston will receive the first commission of the annual Emerging Black Composers Project.
In-person rehearsals and performances using the Dante Audio Networking System, over 200 free student concerts streamed online, and international partnerships are some ways SFCM safely kept the music going.
Pre-College students continued to grow with virtual and in-person lessons and had the opportunity to share and learn in virtual performances and master classes. The Pre-College division launched a new early childhood music program and SFCM announced the publication of a white paper with the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation on the Announce the extraordinary impact of music education on child development.
We launched a new addition to SFCM’s multi-faceted partnership with the San Francisco Ballet, providing year-round housing for SFB School students in the Bowes Center. In fall 2020, 54 Ballet School student residents moved into the Bowes Center with their SFCM peers.
SFCM’s biennial Rubin Institute for Music Criticism continued to support young writers and storied publications to expand the reach of classical music journalism during the pandemic.

Annual Giving
SFCM’s loyal donors make it possible for our students to pursue and achieve their dreams. We salute the exemplary generosity of our annual donors, who ensure that SFCM is able to provide an unmatched, transformative education for the next generation of artists.
Gifts from individuals play a critical role in preparing young artists for a lifetime of success. SFCM Society donors support student scholarships and access to the highest-quality instruments, help attract renowned faculty, and sustain valuable community programs. With deep appreciation, we celebrate all who donated $1,000 or more in annual gifts, including event donations and estate gifts, from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.
