Who studies at SFCM?

In 2024-25, SFCM had an enrollment of 459 Collegiate students, 156 of whom graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, or Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate. Among Collegiate students, voice, piano, strings, and Technology & Composition are the most popular areas of study. In total, there were nearly 800 free student concerts and other events presented live.

Dr. Hohmann at SFCM's 2025 Commencement.

"Someday, it will be 7:30 p.m. and someone is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is full of confusion, a heart that's overwhelmed, and a soul that is weary. Whether they leave with comfort and joy depends on how well you do your art. So as you go forth and continue on your journey, remember what music and beauty are capable of. Go out, inspire the people to come to your concerts and bring them joy, bring them comfort, bring them wonder, perhaps even healing, which will make you a blessing to this world and to the people whose lives you traverse."

How do we share music?

SFCM students, faculty, and visiting artists shared music with over 33,000 audience members through a variety of virtual and live performances, including operas, full orchestral concerts, recitals, and many others.

In spring of 2025, SFCM students performed at the San Francisco Symphony alongside the iconic Academy of St Martin in the Fields ensemble, under the direction of pre-eminent violinist Joshua Bell. Violinist Fiona Cunninghame-Murray played a 1728 Stradivarius violin secured by faculty Chen Zhao and Simon James for the performance; in February, a violin made 14 years before the one she played fetched $11,250,000 at auction.

Elizabeth Burch leads a class as part of the Conservatory in Schools program.

How do we engage the community?

SFCM partners with local organizations to provide in-person music instruction and mentorship to K-12 students attending local public schools and after-school programs throughout San Francisco. Additionally, SFCM musicians perform in schools, hospitals, retirement homes, children’s facilities, and other places where people of limited means and mobility are seldom reached.
