Chamber Music Auditions

Requirements

All String and Piano Chamber Music applicants are required to submit recordings fulfilling the prescreening requirements listed below with the application. Applicants will be informed by January 5 if they are invited to attend a virtual performance interview or have been denied in prescreening. If invited, applicants will select a virtual performance interview time and submit recordings of the Final Audition repertoire listed below. Recordings will be due one week before the selected virtual performance interview time and must be audiovisual, unedited, and performed in one take.

If denied for the String and Piano Chamber Music program, an applicant may be invited to be considered for the Master of Music or Professional Studies Diploma in Instrumental Performance programs which do include extensive training in chamber music.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMER

Prescreening

Candidates must submit a prescreening recording with the following solo repertoire. Please note that current SFCM students are also required to submit a prescreening recording if applying for the Chamber Music program. Repertoire should be performed from memory.

 

Chamber Piano

  • Any first movement of a Beethoven Sonata
  • Any étude of virtuosity from one of the following composers: Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Liszt, or Debussy

 

Chamber Strings

  • Two contrasting movements of a Bach solo suite, sonata, or partita
  • Any first movement of a concerto, with cadenza where applicable

 

Final Audition

Repertoire is subject to change. Candidates who pass prescreening will be notified of any Final Audition repertoire changes.

Solo Selections

 

Piano

  • Any first movement of a Beethoven Sonata

  • Ravel String Quartet, Allegro moderato, Très doux (i) (2nd violin)

 

Viola 

  • Mozart String Quartet in D Major, K. 575, Allegretto (i)
  • Ravel String Quartet, Très lent (iii)

 

Cello

  • Mozart String Quartet in D Major, K. 575, Allegretto (i)
  • Ravel String Quartet, Très lent (iii)
PREFORMED STRING QUARTET

Prescreening

Candidates who wish to apply as a pre-formed string quartet must submit an audiovisual recording of the group performing two contrasting movements of chamber repertoire. Each member of the group should also submit a separate application. Please upload a biography of the chamber group to each application.

 

Final Audition Repertoire

Please prepare two complete chamber works of contrasting style and period.
