SFCM Continuing Education provides professional development opportunities for individuals seeking to enhance their musical experiences and expand their skill set in the arts. Through certification, SFCM Continuing Education is committed to offering avenues for musicians of all levels to further their musical journeys.

Music Theory Certificate

Requirements:

● Completion of 4 Continuing Education Music Theory Classes; one of them must be MUS 301: Harmony & Analysis Workshop
● Project: Detailed analysis of 3 separate works - 1 solo work, 1 chamber work, and 1 orchestral work

Project Requirements:

1. Submit written analysis of your works that includes the following:

○ Detailed harmonic analysis of at least 64 measures per work
○ Provide a roadmap of the musical themes and ideas - melodic changes,
variations, harmonic modulation, return of themes, etc.

2. Prepare a 15 minute presentation on your project:

○ Present the harmonic analysis and roadmap of the works
○ What do you find interesting about the work? (tricky rhythmic passage, interesting
melodic shape, performance practice like fingering or technique, etc.)

Projects must be approved by Harry Whitney. Please email Harry if you are interested in working towards your Music Theory Certificate at hwhitney@sfcm.edu.

Music Appreciation Certificate

Requirements:

● Completion of 4 Continuing Education Music Appreciation classes
● Project: Submit a research paper on a topic related to one of the class subjects.

Project Requirements:

1. Research paper should have a minimum word count of 1,250

○ Please cite your sources and include a bibliography or works cited page

2. Prepare a 15 minute presentation on your research in the style of a TED talk.

○ Students are required to share musical examples during the presentation.
○ Students are encouraged to present with a slideshow, but not required.
