August 3, 2022 by Mark Taylor

As a new school year starts, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) is pleased to announce its fall 2022 concert series, which includes a combination of in-person and live-streamed events.

As part of SFCM’s partnership with artist management company Opus 3 Artists, SFCM will be bringing acclaimed Finnish string quartet Meta4 to the school for a performance and discussion focused on climate change on November 11 and 12. Their event will be in conjunction with the Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) program and will include a masterclass.

SFCM will also hold a birthday celebration concert with former guitar faculty member, visiting artist, and Opus 3 Artist Sérgio Assad. Further highlights include the performance Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 by the SFCM Orchestra, led by SFCM Music Director Edwin Outwater. This performance will feature Opus 3 Artist mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford. Originally scheduled for spring 2022, this show was delayed in response to a surge in the pandemic.

SFCM is pleased to welcome world-renowned and critically acclaimed pianist Yuja Wang as an Artist-in-Residence in November, taking students on an exploration of inventive forms of performance. Masterclass details will be announced in due course.

Continuing this season is the popular series “Chamber Music Tuesday” which will feature world-renowned guest artists like Robert McDonald, Erin O'Meally, and the Miró Quartet in collaboration with SFCM chamber music alumni, faculty, and students.

Music fans are invited to attend these concerts and others inside the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts or the Bowes Center—inaugurated in fall 2021—where 90% of concerts are free and open to the public! In the heart of the SF Arts District, the Bowes Center’s Uccello Lounge is now open and offers patrons dining and drinks with free live music from SFCM students several nights a week. Music includes jazz trios, string quartets and vocalists.

The SFCM Orchestra is also pleased to feature guest conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, the recently announced resident conductor of engagement and education at the San Francisco Symphony and chair of the Emerging Black Composers Project selection committee, at its December concert. That evening will also see 2022’s winner of the Piano Concerto Competition, 2022 piano master’s graduate Alex Fang, as a soloist of Rachminoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Additional performances include SFCM’s New Music Ensemble, led by its director, Nicole Paiement, performing works by SFCM Composition Department Chair David Conte and SFCM alum Rongrong Chen, among others. Also in October, SFCM alum Lukas Janata, winner of the 2021 Highsmith Award, will see his composition performed by the Orchestra on the same program as Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.

SFCM’s lauded Baroque Ensemble will put on their first program of the year on October 30, with works by Giuseppe Tartini, Christoph Graupner and Avison/Scarlatti, featuring 2021-2022 Baroque Concerto Competition winner Pauline Kempf (violin). A week later, a voice and instrumental program on November 6th highlights two of 17th-century Italy’s most unique composers, Francesca Caccini and Isabella Leonarda.

In November, SFCM’s Wind Ensemble’s concert on the 11th will feature, among others, William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 (Afro American Symphony), arranged by Robert O Brian, and Vassily Brandt’s Concertpiece No. 1 (arranged by John Glenesk Mortimer), featuring Michail Thompson, the winner of the 2022 SFCM Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. On the 17th and 18th, the outstanding SFCM Opera and Musical Theatre program will be producing a romantic double bill of Chabrier's Une Education Manquée and Bizet's Le Docteur Miracle, under the direction of Heather Mathews (Stage Director) and Curt Pajer (Music Director and Conductor).

This season will also include a collaborative performance with Roots, Jazz, and American Music (RJAM) students and SFJAZZ in Miner Auditorium as part of SFJAZZ’s Thelonious Monk festival.

Calendar listings are below. Some events require ticketing and, continuing this season, patrons can reserve tickets online using SFCM's site. Please see SFCM’s performance calendar for a complete concert schedule and to register for attendance. Details and programs are subject to change.
