More About the Black Student Union

The purpose of the Black Student Union is to improve the quality of life for Black
students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, by recognizing and fulfilling their
educational and cultural needs. Our goal as a student organization is to provide unity
and support for and amongst black students. The intentions of the Union are as follows:
- To provide a channel and forum for the articulation and expression of views and
interests of the black students at the Conservatory.
- To establish and foster active relations between the Conservatory’s black
students and its faculty and staff.
- To establish and foster active relations between the Conservatory’s black
students and the greater community of the San Francisco/Bay Area.
- To provide educational and social opportunities for the SFCM community which
seeks to discover and celebrate the rich heritage, history, and contributions of
persons of African ancestry.
- To create and provide the Conservatory’s black students with a network of
professionals of similar background, able to provide opportunities for mentorship
and professional development.
- To encourage dialogue within the SFCM community regarding social, political,
and world issues, thus empowering students to utilize their diversity of talents to
make impactful statements on society and the world at large.
These goals are achieved through dedicated students and staff that are committed to
organizing educational, cultural, and community-based events that foster a more
diverse campus, as well as address issues that are pertinent to the black community of
the Conservatory.
