Old Wine in New Bottles

Traditional forms often act as scaffolding to support composers’ most revolutionary ideas. In this Piano Talk, Jeffrey LaDeur performs two monumental essays in 19th-century piano literature that meld tradition and innovation: Chopin’s Second Sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 35, and Brahms’ 25 Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel, Op. 24. Relevant excerpts will include Beethoven’s Sonata in A-flat, Op. 26, Weber’s Sonata in A-flat, Op. 39, and works by Couperin and Handel.
