This session will feature SFCM faculty Haruka Fujii, an acclaimed modern musician with an all-round perspective developed through diverse experiences interpreting contemporary music. As Associate Artistic Director of Yo-Yo Ma's acclaimed Silkroad Ensemble, which explores cultural fusion and collaboration across boundaries, Ms. Fujii gained valuable skills in curating cross-cultural programs, include serving as teaching artist for Toolbox International Creative Academy (TICA Festival) in Hong Kong. She also co-founded the adventurous percussion duo Utari with her sister, applying their background in traditional Japanese music to innovative new works. Ms. Fujii will share her approach drawing from these roles in her faculty appointment at SFCM, where she emphasizes an experimentation bridging styles. Additionally, Hong Kong-based percussionist Alvin Chan, Artist of Toolbox Percussion, will give a live demonstration performance of works by renowned Bay Area composer Charles Boone. Mr. Boone is a distinguished artist whose pieces have been performed by leading orchestras across America and who brings a unique creative vision developed through years teaching at prestigious institutions and his background writing for arts publications. This special session will provide invaluable insights into the vibrant present and future of music from these legendary figures, engaging audiences with their diverse experiences fusion cultural exchange with pioneering musicianship.

Toolbox Percussion (Artistic Director: Louis Siu '08) has been driving percussive arts programming in Hong Kong since 2012, curating ambitious music projects and challenging the best in the field whilst also continually nurturing new musical talent in innovative ways. The company works to make new music happen by commissioning, developing, collaborating, professional training, performing, recording and touring contemporary performances. The acclaimed Toolbox Percussion Trilogy, spread over a time span of 3-year (from 2015-2017), has been a proven success in creating cutting-edge and innovative programmes that challenged local artists, enhanced cultural exchange by collaborating with world-class musicians and developed a series of outreach and professional educational activities.
