Congratulations are in order!

SFCM graduate Stan Muncy has joined the San Francisco Symphony as section percussionist. He joins the nearly two dozen SFCM faculty who also serve as members of the SFS—many of them principals.

“I am elated to be joining the SF Symphony family after 14 years as an extra!” Muncy said. “Over that time, I’ve formed strong friendships with my colleagues in the orchestra. I feel immense gratitude to spend the rest of my career with these magnificent musicians.”

Muncy, who graduated with a master's degree in 2006 from SFCM, has also taught in the Pre-College program since 2018. “Don't stop doing what you love,” Muncy said. "You never know when you might strike gold!”

A native of California, Muncy grew up in the Central Valley and moved to the Bay Area for college. Muncy was previously a member of the Honolulu Symphony and Santa Rosa Symphony. He has also toured with the contemporary music ensemble Eighth Blackbird, participated in the Spoleto Festival and Music Academy of the West, and recorded film and video game scores at Skywalker Sound, Capitol Records, and Warner Brothers Studios.

As far as advice for student musicians? “Find a way to be yourself. Bring that to the table. If you can walk out of an audition feeling like you represented yourself accurately, imperfections and all, then you really have accomplished something.”
