Meredith Monk

Over the last fifty years, Meredith Monk has been hailed as "a magician of the voice" and "one of America’s coolest composers." Celebrated internationally, Monk’s work has been presented by BAM, Lincoln Center Festival, Houston Grand Opera, London’s Barbican Centre, and at major venues around the world.

Workshop and Lecture

Beginning with breathing techniques and a detailed vocal and movement warm-up, participants work with the voice and body as multifaceted instruments for exploring range, timbre, gesture, resonance, character, landscape and rhythm.  The work aims to uncover the fundamentals of performance as a vehicle for spiritual transformation.  Select pieces from Monk's repertoire will be taught.

Over the last six decades Monk has received numerous awards and honors, most recently the 2017 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize and a 2015 National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama. In conjunction with her 50th season of performing and creating work, she was named Carnegie Hall’s 2014-15 Debs Composer’s Chair. Celebrated internationally, her work has been presented at major venues throughout the world.
