What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?
Be yourself, learn, have fun and the rest will follow
What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?
What do you value most in life?
What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?
Freshman year of college when I started booking shows in my dorm, I quickly realized there's a whole army of people working behind the scenes working hard to create the live and recorded music we know and love. I wanted to be a part of that process in whatever ways aligned with my skillset but that could also honor and nurture the reason I chose the career path in the first place, love of music.
What was a turning point in your career?
When I was hired at my record company, which was an incredibly lengthy and difficult process. Small record labels often create jobs out of thin air so you have to be patient with the process and allow these organizations to make room for you on their own timeline. Fortunately I was willing to wait and the rest is history.
If you could play only three composers for the rest of your life, who would they be?
Courtney Barnett, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King
From a music history perspective, what year and city are most important to you, and why?
Los Angeles (Laurel Canyon), early 1970s. The revolution that was uniting ornate orchestration with lyrical pop music compositions is something that has shaped the type of music I gravitate towards even to this day.
Please list your most important collaborations.
