The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the appointment of Matt Brewer to its faculty. Brewer, a bassist who has toured with some of the world’s most esteemed jazz artists and a recent addition to the SFJAZZ Collective, will join his colleagues in the ensemble in Fall 2018 as a faculty member in SFCM’s Roots, Jazz, and American Music program.

“Matt Brewer is one of the most versatile and accomplished bassists performing in jazz today,” says RJAM Executive Director Simon Rowe. “As a recent addition to the SFJAZZ Collective, we are delighted to have him work with our RJAM students at SFCM as they also work towards careers as young jazz artists.”

“I’m proud to be joining the faculty of SFCM this fall,” says Brewer. “The teachers here are among some of the best working musicians in the world. The combined experience of this faculty provides students a unique, real-world opportunity to learn about music. I’m very much looking forward to working with all of the students and to discovering and learning with them!”

Brewer has traveled the world playing in the bands of Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, David Sánchez, Dave Binney, Gerald Clayton, Ben Wendel, Aaron Parks, Vijay Iyer, Dhafer Youssef, Antonio Sanchez, Mark Turner, Steve Lehman, Adam Rogers, Ben Monder, and Lage Lund, among many others. He has also been a frequent guest lecturer at the Banff Centre.

Brewer was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Albuquerque, NM, surrounded by a family of musicians and artists. His grandfather played trumpet in the bands of Charlie Barnett, Woody Herman, and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. His mother worked as a jazz radio DJ and his father is a trombonist and educator. Brewer attended Interlochen Arts Academy and The Juilliard School.
