SAN FRANCISCO, CA -The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the details of its 2018-19 season, the 101st year of the institution's existence. After celebrating the Conservatory's centennial last season, SFCM looks to the future in its curricular model combining performance, history, and the humanities in thematically linked programming. This season's theme, "Sound and Image," brings the fine arts together with classes, concerts, and other events that examine the relationship between music, visual art, and the moving image.

"The evolving landscape of the visual universe has been an inspiration and companion to the creators and performers of music for centuries," says SFCM President David H. Stull. "The modern world has amplified our conjoined experience of these media beyond any point in human history, and this season we will examine and reveal the power of music and image--not only its capacity to expand human expression, but also to drive human behavior. We are inevitably products of our environment, and today we find ourselves evermore immersed in a world that is created for us. It promises to be a very exciting and illuminating year."

In the fall, the Conservatory tours the spectrum of visual art and its applications to the sound world. A seminar in French impressionism, a class on the influence of graphic novels, and performances of works influenced by visual art such as Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and pieces that incorporate visual elements fill out a packed semester.

In the spring, the moving image plays a central role in the curriculum with classes on film music motifs, the origins of cinema, and literature and its relationship to film, as well as a collaboration between the Technology and Applied Composition program and SFFILM. Stage works from multiple stylistic periods, including Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Jones and Schmidt's The Fantasticks, offer a dynamic view of music and movement.

SPECIAL EVENTS

A number of events this season warrant special attention in SFCM's 101st year. On September 23, prior to Kick-off Weekend, which takes place September 29 and 30, the Conservatory hosts OcTUBAfest, a concert extravaganza paying homage to the tuba. Two events in the fall and spring on October 12 and February 10, part of the "Music for Food" initiative, feature SFCM faculty, alumni, and students coming together to give performances that benefit the community, combating hunger and providing support for people in need. The legendary Bay Brass, composed of a number of SFCM faculty, put on a performance at SFCM on October 22, and as part of the 4th Biennial Rubin Institute for Music Criticism, the International Contemporary Ensemble comes to SFCM on October 26 to perform for the Institute's fellows and the community at large. For the third time, on November 24, SFCM hosts TECHAPELLA, the mash-up a cappella concert featuring vocal groups composed of employees from Silicon Valley's most visible companies. The Kronos Quartet collaborates with SFCM and the San Francisco Unified School District for a combined performance on January 30 as part of SFCM's community engagement initiatives. On March 17, the Hot Air Music Festival, a student-run and student-programmed production, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a day-long series of performances in all of SFCM's performance spaces--an event that highlights some of the most recent and relevant music composed today. March 20 and April 11 see two competitions held at SFCM: the Conservatory's Biennial Art Song Competition and the Kristin Pankonin Art Song Award Showcase, respectively.

RESIDENCIES, MASTER CLASSES, AND GUEST PERFORMANCES

Guest artists from around the world come to SFCM this season to work with SFCM students and give public performances. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky gives the first master class of the season on September 16, and master classes on October 4 and 5 are given by violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley and baroque violinist Ingrid Matthews, respectively. Violist Hsin-Yun Huang gives a master class on October 19, and, as part of his residency, David McCarroll gives a concert in collaboration with SFCM faculty and students on October 18. Legendary pianist and friend of SFCM Leon Fleisher returns to SFCM on October 24 for a master class. On November 29, at the end of the fall semester, Gil Kalish gives a chamber music master class. Bay Area ensembles, including the Berkeley Symphony and San Francisco Contemporary Players, give performances at the Conservatory with SFCM musicians on January 11 and 18, respectively. The Roots, Jazz, and American Music program welcomes pianist and bandleader Chucho Valdes for a master class in collaboration with SFJAZZ on February 4, and the Historical Performance department, in partnership with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, welcomes violinist Rachel Barton Pine for a master class on February 7. On February 9, violinist Kyung Sun Lee gives a master class before performing with faculty member Corey McVicar in a concert on February 11. Also on February 11, two master classes, chamber music with the Ying Quartet and historical performance with conductor Jeffrey Thomas (the latter presented by American Bach Soloists), provide a full evening of events. March 4 sees the return of internationally renowned cellist Steven Isserlis for a public master class with the cello department. American Bach Soloists also presents baritone William Sharp on March 18 and cellist Norman Fischer gives a chamber music master class on March 21 ahead of a residency concert on March 22 with SFCM faculty and students. On April 29, John Thiessen gives a historical performance master class on natural trumpet.

LARGE ENSEMBLES

This season, SFCM welcomes both faculty and a number of internationally renowned guest conductors to lead the Conservatory's large instrumental ensembles. Nicole Paiement leads the SFCM New Music Ensemble in a performance featuring Steve Reich's City Life as well as alumnus Ian Dicke's Grand Central on September 30, part of Kick-off Weekend, and in another concert later in the season on May 2. On October 19 and 20, James Ross, Orchestra Director of Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, leads the SFCM Orchestra in works by Lutosławski, Barber, and Brahms. Christopher Rountree, director of wild Up, leads the Orchestra on December 8 and 9 in works by Vaughan Williams, Mussorgsky, and Ashley Fure. Taking place during Winter Term, San Francisco Ballet Musical Director and Principal Conductor Martin West helms a combined ensemble composed of the Berkeley Symphony and SFCM musicians in the Conservatory's annual concerto competition winners concert on January 11, a performance that also sees the world premiere of a new work by Highsmith Competition winner Daniel De Togni. The SFCM Orchestra performs again in the spring on February 2 and 3 with conductor Edwin Outwater, a frequent guest conductor with the San Francisco Symphony and music director laureate of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, performing works by Canteloube, Lili Boulanger, and Debussy. On February 24, Steven Schick, music director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, leads the SFCM Chamber Orchestra in a program of 20th- and 21st-century works by Pamela Z, Webern, Dallapiccola, and Anna Thorvaldsdottir. On April 23, San Francisco Symphony Resident Conductor Christian Reif closes out the orchestra season conducting the SFCM Orchestra in a program featuring works by Messiaen, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky.

OPERA AND MUSICAL THEATRE

Stage productions span the centuries this season at SFCM with repertoire from the operatic and musical theatre canons. On November 14 and 15, SFCM produces Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias, directed by Heather Mathews and conducted by Curt Pajer. On December 6 and 7, Weill and Brecht's iconic work, The Threepenny Opera, will be directed by Michael Mohammed and Lauren Mayer. In the spring, SFCM offers a favorite in the canon-Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, directed by Jose Maria Condemi and conducted by Curt Pajer, on April 5 and 7-and produces Schmidt and Jones' The Fantasticks on April 13, directed by Michael Mohammed and Michael Horsley. The SFCM opera season closes out with John Musto and Mark Campbell's Later the Same Evening on May 2 and 3, directed by Heather Mathews and conducted by Curt Pajer.

HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE

Historical Performance (HP) at SFCM encapsulates a broad range of musical styles and periods. From the baroque to the early twentieth century, the study and performance of period music is at the forefront of the Conservatory's academic and concert offerings. In addition to several master classes presented by American Bach Soloists, SFCM's concerts this year range from baroque opera to ragtime. In a combined Historical Performance / Faculty Artist Series concert, department chair Corey Jamason joins HP faculty members Elizabeth Blumenstock and Elisabeth Reed with special guest Carla Moore for a program of works by Purcell, Leclair, Buxtehude, and Pepusch on September 17. On September 30, SFCM celebrates the 150th anniversary of Scott Joplin's birth and the 130th anniversary of May Aufderheide's and Irene Giblin's birth in a ragtime spectacular. To close out the fall, on November 11, the SFCM Baroque Ensemble performs the music of Corelli, Telemann, and Vivaldi. In the spring, SFCM presents a concert version of Handel's Tamerlano, conducted by Corey Jamason, on March 9 and 10. The Baroque Ensemble again performs on April 28 in a concert featuring baroque concerto competition winners.

FACULTY ARTIST SERIES

Concerts on SFCM's Faculty Artist Series abound this season. Chamber Music Department Co-Chair and violinist Ian Swensen opens up the 101st season on September 6 with a concert featuring fellow faculty cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau and pianist Weicong Zhang performing works by Beethoven, Ravel, and Smetana. Historical Performance Department Chair Corey Jamason teams up with Elizabeth Blumenstock and Elizabeth Reed for a program of works by Purcell, Leclair, Buxtehude, and Pepusch on September 17. A host of faculty members from the strings and chamber music departments join together on September 24 to perform works by Beethoven and Schumann, as well as an arrangement of Bach's Chaconne for four violas. On October 1, Jean-Michel Fonteneau, joined by Dimitri Murrath and students, puts on an eclectic program, featuring works by Gabrielli, Saariaho, and Dutilleux. Roots, Jazz, and American Music faculty members Simon Rowe and Jason Hainsworth give a jazz concert on October 15, and on October 21, Dimitri Murrath gives the world premiere of Sean Hickey's Viola Sonata.
