While she may describe it as “surreal,” it was a real life dream come true for SFCM Voice graduate Lindsay Martin when she made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera.

“The energy on the Met stage is something so special, I felt so supported by everyone,” Martin said. The 2022 graduate performed in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto for the opera house's 2024-2025 season.

“I had so much fun being in the rehearsal room and on the stage with such amazing artists. I learned so much and how fast the process is from rehearsal room to the stage,” Martin added.

“My teacher from SFCM, Catherine Cook, sent me flowers to my dressing room and the sweetest messages,” Martin continued. “Her support gave me courage and confidence to know that I was ready for this…because let’s be real, it’s intimidating. I’m so grateful to still be such dear friends with Cathy and other Voice faculty.” Cook is the chair of Voice and Opera Studies at SFCM, which is expanding its voice curriculum to multiply opportunities for young singers.

“SFCM taught me so much about myself and my instrument,” Martin said. “The experiences I had as an undergraduate gave me many tools in order to accomplish a goal like my Met debut. I am forever grateful for my journey and the people that helped me to this point.”

Originally from California, mezzo-soprano Martin spent this past summer back at SFCM as part of the prestigious Merola Opera program. She is also in her first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.
