Congratulations are in order for SFCM guitar instructor Meng Su, who has been awarded the 2022 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize for music by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and the William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund.

"Very honored to receive the Mary Sawyers Baker Award in Music!" Su said of her newest accolade. She was chosen out of 600 to receive recognition for her artistry in music. Five other artists won for their work in Interdisciplinary Arts, Performance, Film/Video, Visual Arts and Literary Arts.

"The Baker Awards come with no strings attached, so can act as a transformational catalyst to forward area artists' careers and practices" said Jeannie Howe, Executive Director of the GBCA. The prize includes a $10,000 award to Su, as part of the program.

"The awards are an affirmation of excellence and encouragement. GBCA is grateful to have a long-term partnership with the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, proud of all we have accomplished together over the past fourteen years, and honored to be a part of the lives of so many exceptional artists,” Howe added.

Su, along with the other awardees, will be profiled on Maryland Public Television's Artworks program in a special airing in October 2022. It is the second year in a row Su has been awarded as part of the GBCA's yearly program, and not the only connection to the city for her: She's the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society's Artist-in-Residence for their 2021-2022 season.

Su submitted her solo recording of "Avner's Theme," from the film Munich, composed by John Williams and Francesco Tarrega's "Rosita" as part of her portfolio.
