Q&A
What is your hometown?
Corvallis, Oregon
What are you passionate about outside of music?
I love nature: camping and hiking. I also love biking.
Who were your major teachers?
Jane Randolph, Willene Gunn, Kathy Cathcart
What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?
Learning to sing is always a process, you never “arrive.”
What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?
Why and how is breathing in singing so important?
What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?
When is sang a solo in a chorus concert in junior high.
What was a turning point in your career?
When I went through Breast Cancer years ago, I let go of the “career” and realized I didn’t really care about success in that way anymore, and that I just wanted to perform, teach and make music however I could and have fun. After letting go, many more opportunities came my way because I was more open to them. I stopped caring so much about what people thought and did what made me happy.
If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?
I can’t even imagine, maybe a Psychologist.
What is your daily practice routine?
I sit and learn music sporadically, and vocalize/sing songs for 15-30 minutes per day.
If you could play only three composers for the rest of your life, who would they be?
Verdi, Mozart, and Britten
What is your unrealized project?
Singing Knoxville 1915 by Samuel Barber with an orchestra.
What do you think makes a concert experience unique?
Feeling that connection with an audience, and moving through a piece with them.
