Biography

A native of South Korea, Hyelim Murrath is an accomplished violist and dedicated educator whose career spans nearly two decades of performance and teaching across Asia and the United States.

A graduate of Korea National University of Arts and New England Conservatory in Boston, her teachers include Dimitri Murrath, Daniel Panner, and Soon Hwa Oh. She has also participated in numerous masterclasses with internationally celebrated violists, including Kim Kashkashian, Roberto Díaz, Steven Tenenbom, C.J. Chang, and James Dunham, experiences that broadened her artistic perspective and deepened her understanding of viola performance at the highest level.

Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that a strong foundation is the key to musical growth. She places great emphasis on intonation, tone production, and healthy playing posture, while fostering an environment in which students feel motivated and supported. She encourages students to begin playing the instrument as soon as possible, integrating technical development with the joy of music-making from the earliest stages. Lessons are tailored to each student’s personality, learning speed, and concentration level, ensuring that their progress is steady and sustainable.

Today, Ms. Murrath continues to balance her teaching with performance, actively engaging in opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, mentor young musicians, and contribute to the cultural life of the San Francisco Bay Area. Her dedication to both artistry and education ensures that her students not only develop into skilled musicians but also carry with them a deep love and respect for music throughout their lives.
