At SFCM, the management companies come to you.

That was the case in November, when students in the Voice Department were selected to sing in a showcase for Nathan Wentworth, Opus 3 Artists' Senior Vice President of its Vocal Department, alongside artist manager Trevor Newman (Wentworth is also an active artist manager for Opus 3.)

"It was a pleasure to visit SFCM and hear the outstanding vocal students," Newman says. "Nathan and I were deeply impressed by the level of preparation, artistry, and professionalism they brought to the room. It’s exciting to see such exceptional young talent being nurtured, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to spend time with them."

Wentworth added, "SFCM is clearly cultivating a vibrant, supportive environment for emerging artists, and we're grateful to have played a small part in that."

Student Morgan Wolfe, who studies with Rhoslyn Jones at SFCM, explains that she'd never participated in an event like this before. "It was really special to get to sing and present myself to real industry managers," she says. "In such a transitional time between being a student and branching out into the field, feedback like this is pivotal for me, and can help inform how I put myself out there artistically."

Opus 3 Artists joined the SFCM alliance of performing-arts companies in 2020. The Conservatory has since expanded that alliance to include Askonas Holt and record label Pentatone, making SFCM one of the largest such organizations in the world. Through these connections, students at the Conservatory have direct access to not only artists represented by the companies—who visit SFCM for masterclasses and artistic residences—but the entirety of the classical music industry infrastructure, from managers like Wentworth and Newman to opportunities to record for Pentatone, as students did for a recent Lara Downes release.

"We were thrilled to welcome Opus 3 managers Nathan Wentworth and Trevor Newman to SFCM!" Voice Department Executive Chair Richard Cox says. "They heard seven of our singers and provided beneficial, real-world feedback to each of them as they hone their skills as an emerging 21st-century vocal artist. These sessions are one of many ongoing opportunities that our SFCM singers have to connect with industry professionals worldwide."
