What is your hometown?

La Jolla, CA

What are you passionate about outside of music?

Travel and food!

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

"Practice makes progress." Or Goethe: "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?

“I don't quite understand. Can you please say that in a different way?”

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

Discovering the pure joy of singing at the age of 18.

What was a turning point in your career?

Performing a Sondheim show at Studio ACT where I understood the storytelling power in musicals, requiring both good singing and good acting.

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

A tour through great archaeological sites world-wide.

What is your daily practice routine?

I sing 30 minutes a day to keep my voice in shape.

If you could play only three composers for the rest of your life, who would they be?

Mozart, Gershwin, and Sondheim.

What is your unrealized project?

Acting in or directing the major Sondheim shows that I haven't yet done!

Biography

Milissa Carey is a member of the Opera Department, teaching acting, from beginning through advanced, with a focus on developing strong singer-actor skills for the SFCM students. In addition to her work at SFCM, Milissa teaches and directs in the M.F.A. program at the American Conservatory Theater as well as Foothill College, in both the Music and Theatre Departments. Her training includes a B.M. in vocal performance from the SFCM, an M.M. in vocal performance from the University of Southern California.  In addition she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, the American Conservatory Theatre, and three seasons with the Wesley Balk Music Theatre Institute in Minneapolis. Her directing credits include both musical theatre and theatre. Representative credits include a wide range of shows including Sunday in the Park with George, Side Show, Shrek The Musical, The Sound of Music, Kiss Me Kate, Almost, Maine, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors, South Pacific, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, She Loves Me, 9 to 5 The Musical and Cinderella (Broadway Version). A member of Actors Equity Association and an award-winning Bay Area actress, Milissa has performed leading roles with many Bay Area theatre companies including TheatreWorks, Center Repertory Theatre of Walnut Creek, San Jose Repertory Theatre, American Musical Theatre of San Jose, CentralWorks, and 42nd Street Moon. She was in the cast of the 25th Anniversary Broadway National Tour of Evita under the direction of Hal Prince.
