Biography

A native of Taiwan, Wenyi Shih began her violin studies at the age of 8, with her great aunt, Sylvia Lee. Wenyi went on to receive her Bachelor of Music degree from the Boston Conservatory on full scholarship, under the tutelage of Lynn Chang, While in the Northeast, Wenyi performed widely as an orchestral and chamber musician, including regular performances with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. 

Since moving to the Bay Area, Wenyi has been the Acting Associate Concertmaster and Acting Assistant Principal Second Violin of the San Francisco
Ballet Orchestra as well as an acting member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, performing for over 18 years. Wenyi is a fixture in the chamber music
scene, having performed at the Noontime Concerts Series and Musical Sundaes, to name a few. She has been a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and has performed at the Musicorda, Mendocino and Napa Valley Music Festivals, Ballet Sun Valley, Music at Tateuchi, and Mainly Mozart Festival.
A dedicated teacher, Wenyi’s students have been selected for the Junior Bach Festival, Burlingame Musical Club Competition, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, California Youth Symphony and Golden State Youth Symphony. She has also been a coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Young Peoples’ Symphony Orchestra.

Wenyi performs on a violin crafted in 1700 by a member of the Tononi family and bows by Simon among others. In her spare time, she enjoys maintaining
a private teaching studio, traveling, and practicing her solfège to everything she hears. Wenyi lives in San Francisco with her husband, Eric Sung, their cat, Muffin.
