In a new partnership, SFCM is teaming up with the Hawaii Chamber Music Festival (HCMF) for the festival's upcoming 2023 Summer Young Artist Program.

This new collaboration will feature HCMF’s first-ever string quartet-in-residence, named the Kaimana Quartet in celebration of the sponsorship and comprised of graduate students from the SFCM chamber music program. SFCM musicians will work and perform with local young musicians and will be featured artists in the festival’s concert series in June 2023. 

The four selected students will be Shintaro Taneda, Mathea Goh (violins), Seongwoo Jeong (viola), and Calvin Kung, (cello). "The opportunity for SFCM Chamber Music students to mentor younger musicians and perform concerts is always an incredibly valuable one, and to have this all take place in a beautiful setting like Hawaii makes this partnership with the Hawaii Chamber Music Festival an even better experience for our students,” said Dimitri Murrath, chair of the String and Piano Chamber music program.

Established in 2018, the Hawaii Chamber Music Festival has featured more than 50 artists, 30 concerts, and numerous partnerships in the community. The Young Artist Program was created in 2021 and is Hawaii’s premiere tuition-free chamber music for talented local youth.

“We already feature an amazing lineup of teaching artists and guest artists, but we wanted to expand our offerings to our students to enhance the curriculum,” said Christopher Yick, the founder of the HCMF. “SFCM students will play a huge role in mentoring and teaching our Young Artist Program students. From coaching chamber music to performing side-by-side, the opportunity will not only be musically fulfilling for our students but act as a model of inspiration,” Yick added.

During the festival in mid-June, SFCM students will be housed in the Kaimana Beach Hotel in Honolulu.
