What is your hometown?

Houston, Texas.

What is your favorite recording?

San Francisco Symphony under Herbert Blomstedt: Hindemith, Symphony: Mathis der Maler. Trauermusik, Symphonic Metamorphosis by Carl Maria von Weber.

What are you passionate about outside of music?

Watching sci-fi and horror movies with my wife Jeannie, brewing beer, and running/hiking with my dog @mycaptaincapi.

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

"Never louder than lovely."

What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?

How to craft a balanced and creatively fulfilling career as a musician.

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

My first concerto performance with orchestra in high school: The Arutunian Concerto for Trumpet with the American Festival for the Arts.

What was a turning point in your career?

Conducting the Rite of Spring at Burning Man, 2017.

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

Mechanical, architectural or civil engineer.

What is your daily practice routine?

I teach mostly in afternoons and evenings, so I try to get all my score study and trumpet practice done first thing in the morning.

From a music history perspective, what year and city are most important to you? Why?

Paris or New Orleans in the early 20th century.

What recordings can we hear you on?

San Francisco Symphony, Charles Ives No. 3 and No. 4 and San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Frankenstein by Lowell Liebermann.

In addition to his work at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Brad is an Assistant Professor of Conducting at San Francisco State University, the music director and conductor of both the Art Haus Collective and the Contra Costa Wind Symphony, and maintains a busy schedule as a guest conductor, trumpeter, and educator.

Art Haus Collective brings spectacular performances of classical and contemporary works into unique spaces. They began with a ballet production of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring at the Burning Man where an estimated 10,000 people were in attendance and photos from the event were featured in the Smithsonian’s exhibit No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man. www.arthausonplaya.com

As a guest conductor, Brad works with SFCM composer Mason Bates' Mercury Soul projects, the San Francisco Civic Symphony, and a range of professional, community, and educational ensembles all over the San Francisco Bay Area.

Brad regularly performs on trumpet with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and Ballet Orchestras. In 2018, he toured with the Indianapolis Symphony to the Kennedy Center as a part of the SHIFT Festival and most recently performed as guest principal trumpet in the Louisville Orchestra.

As an educator, Brad was formerly the chair of instrumental music at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts high school in San Francisco, and taught abroad at the Gunma Kokusai Academy in Japan. More info and updates available at www.bradhogarth.com
