Artist Bio
Born in 2000, Sydney resident Maryann Gou began piano studies at age 8 with her mother, a pupil of Dan Zhaoyi. Maryann then commenced lessons with Neta Anne Maughan AM, and by age 11 had performed Mendelssohn’s 1st concerto in the ABC Young Performers’ Awards. She has since performed as soloist with orchestra, concerti by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikowsky, and has won over 150 prizes across Sydney, Australia.
Some highlights include performance across Vienna, Prague and Salzburg, as well as, in Carnegie Hall and Trump Tower while on tour with Meriden as a music scholar. She has performed in the Sydney Town Hall, Zenith Theatre, Independent Theatre, and Australian Digital Concert Hall platform. In 2015, she won the Margaret Chalmers Scholarship. In 2016, she performed the Butterfly Lovers’ Concerto. In 2017, she performed the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos. In 2022, she won both the BlueScope WIN Baroque and Bond & Davies Piano Scholarship.
As a soloist, Maryann has performed in masterclass with Tamara Anna-Cislowska, Andrey Gugnin, Sharon Mann, and Yuja Wang. As a chamber musician, Maryann is coached by Yoshikazu Nagai, Eric Chin, and Jeremiah Shaw, and has performed in masterclass with the Miró Quartet.
Recently admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of NSW and Solicitor in NSW, Maryann is currently completing her MMus in Piano Performance with Garrick Ohlsson at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, subsidised by the Drs. Ben and A. Jess Shenson Scholarship and Janet Rose Piano Scholarship.
About SFCM's Piano Department
SFCM pianists study in a focused, energized, and supportive environment. Artist-teachers with a wealth of international performing experience provide close instruction and mentorship to an exclusive group of fewer than 50 students. Performance opportunities within the Conservatory and around San Francisco help prepare students for a career at the highest professional level. Students also have the chance to enter a yearly concerto competition, the winner of which performs with the Conservatory Orchestra. Interdepartmental collaboration, guest artist residencies, and master classes round out a transformative piano education. Recent guest artists include Emanuel Ax, Sergei Babayan, Richard Goode, Stephen Hough, Menahem Pressler, and Shai Wosner.
