More than 650 music aficionados filled the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts at its first ever open house to get an inside look at where SFCM students are perfecting their craft and inventing the next generation of performances.

Our free community day on March 12 aimed to showcase the Conservatory’s newest cultural addition to the city, the Bowes Center. This state-of-the-art building incorporates student housing, dining, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, multiple amazing concert halls, a recording studio, and a radio station all under one roof! Our hope was to provide stunning music performances and welcome the public inside San Francisco's newest home for music in the heart of the Civic Center.

“The ethos of the Bowes Center is not just to create a space of innovation for our talented students to invent the future of music, but also to bring great art to our community,” said SFCM President David H. Stull. “This center will transform the musical life of our city. We are so excited about all the opportunities this building provides, and we look forward to seeing the public return for one of our many free performances,” he added. 

In addition to multiple live concerts including a performance by quartet-in-residence the Telegraph Quartet, guests were invited to experience the latest in sound technology in Studio G, with interactive audio and visual installations. Visitors also saw presentations from SFCM’s Opera and Musical Theatre program and a live masterclass with guitarist and faculty member Meng Su.

We hope to see you again soon at the Bowes Center, where SFCM puts on more than 500 performances each year, and 90 percent of concerts are free and open to the public.
