Our Impact | 2017-18

We are honored to celebrate the inspiring students, faculty, staff, and community of supporters who over the past 100 years have made SFCM a global center for musical innovation, excellence, and opportunity.

On behalf of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Board of Trustees, we are pleased to share with you highlights of SFCM’s Centennial, all made possible by your support. The 2017-18 year saw the launch of our new Roots, Jazz, and American Music (RJAM) program; the successful completion of the third year of our Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) program; and the third year of Winter Term, a three-week period in which students pursue intensive professional development projects. As our 2018 graduates demonstrate, SFCM alumni continue to excel as teachers, performers, collaborators, and entrepreneurs in diverse industries and communities around the world.

We begin our new century with an innovative curriculum that expands and enriches the possibilities of conservatory education, and by breaking ground for the Bowes Center for Performing Arts, which will provide us with our own student residence hall as well as state-of-the-art performing venues and teaching facilities.

Thank you for your inspiring generosity at this exciting and transformative time. Your support enables our students and faculty to achieve their best and helps us make music education accessible within the San Francisco Bay Area. We hope you’ll join us this year to experience the impact of your investment in SFCM.

Who studies at SFCM?

SFCM is proud to be the most diverse conservatory in the country. In 2017-18, we had an enrollment of 414 Collegiate students, 162 of whom graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, or Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate. Among Collegiate students, voice and strings are the two most popular areas of study.

How do we share music?

SFCM students, faculty, and visiting artists engaged audiences in 570 concerts, and recitals at 50 Oak Street with a total attendance of more than 30,000. Outside our walls, SFCM students gave more than 400 performances at galas, weddings, and other events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Our facilities enabled other arts presenters to entertain an additional 6,320 people in a total of 56 performances.

An SFCM student teaching within the community

How do we serve the community?

3,783 people with limited access to music experienced 115 performances by SFCM students in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and other San Francisco Bay Area locations.

About 2,600 K-12 students attending local public schools benefited from the music instruction and mentorship of SFCM students and recent alumni. We also launched Bridge to Arts and Music (BAM), a community-based after-school program that provides music education to local children who may not otherwise have access.

Supporters of the Conservatory

Who supports us?

1,051 individual donor households, 65 institutional donors, 129 legacy society members, and 18 estates, in addition to our inspiring volunteers, collaborators, faculty, and staff, contributed to the success of our students and programs. Together, we raised more funds in our Centennial than in any year past.

What does our future look like?

In April, we announced the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts, SFCM’s new facility that will provide student housing and state-of-the-art teaching, recording, and performance spaces upon opening in 2020. The Bowes Center will be located at the corner of Hayes and Van Ness and will expand SFCM’s existing campus in the Civic Center.
